How to build your fuel transfer system

Fill-Rite® manufactures durable and reliable fuel transfer pumps, meters, and accessories. When building your Fill-Rite fuel transfer system, start by selecting the right pump for your needs.
The two most critical factors in selecting the right pump are:
- Identifying the correct power source or voltage
- Identifying the ideal performance level based on the equipment it will be refueling
STEP
1
First, identify the correct power source, or voltage, for your Fill-Rite pump
12V or 24V DC pumps
Typically used in mobile applications and powered by a 12V or 24V battery already in your vehicle or equipment
- 12V or 24V vehicle or equipment battery
- Mounted on mobile fuel transfer tanks in truck beds or transfer trailers
115V or 230V AC pumps
Typically used in stationary applications and powered by a standard 115V or 230V electrical supply
- 115V or 230V standard electrical supply
- Mounted on above ground storage tanks
Hand pumps (non-electric)
Can be used in mobile or stationary applications. Powered by you, not by electricity
- Hand powered
- Mounted on any tank
Note: You can typically find the pump’s voltage on the upper-left corner of the packaging box.
Next, select a pump with the right performance level
Performance is determined by a pump’s flow rate, which is measured in gallons per minute (GPM) or liters per minute (LPM). Start by considering the average fuel tank size of the equipment that you’ll be filling.
Generally, you’ll want a pump with a flow rate that can fill your equipment in 2-4 minutes. Selecting the right performance level leads to one simple question: how much time do you want to spend refuelling?
| Recommended Fill-Rite Pump Flow Rate | You will spend 2 minutes refueling equipment with a: | You will spend 4 minutes refueling equipment with a: |
|---|---|---|
| 8 GPM / 30 LPM | 16 Gallon / 60 Liter Fuel Tank | 32 Gallon / 120 Liter Fuel Tank |
| 15 GPM / 56 LPM | 30 Gallon / 113 Liter Fuel Tank | 60 Gallon / 227 Liter Fuel Tank |
| 20 GPM / 75 LPM | 40 Gallon / 151 Liter Fuel Tank | 80 Gallon / 302 Liter Fuel Tank |
| 25 GPM / 94 LPM | 50 Gallon / 189 Liter Fuel Tank | 100 Gallon / 378 Liter Fuel Tank |
| 35 GPM / 132 LPM | 70 Gallon / 264 Liter Fuel Tank | 140+ Gallon / 529+ Liter Fuel Tank |
| 60+ GPM / 227+ LPM | Bulk Transfer | |
Now that you’ve selected your pump, let’s complete your system
Accessory key:
- Pump
- Power Cable
- Flow Meter
- Filter
- Hose
- Swivel
- Nozzle
- Suction Pipe

Note: Before adding any accessories to your system, identify the outlet size for your pump. Your accessories will need to match these specifications.
ADD your fuel transfer system accessories
Fill-Rite offers a complete line of fuel transfer accessories to improve ease of use and protect your equipment.
Adding accessories:
Even though accessories will make equipment easier to use, adding accessories like filters, meters, and swivels could slow down your flow rate. So consider sizing up your pump’s performance level to compensate!
STEP
2
Pick your power cable
Most of Fill-Rite’s DC Pumps come with a power cable. Conversely, AC Pumps should be wired by a licensed electrician.

STEP
3
Pick your flow meter
Fuel is typically a large expense for companies that use heavy equipment or vehicles, and flow meters help track where that fuel is going.

Digital displays
For the easiest, most accurate measurement of fuel (+/- 1%)

Mechanical displays
Measures accurately (+/- 2%) but with a more traditional appearance
STEP
4
Pick your filter
Filters help protect your vehicles and equipment from particulates, water, rust, and other microbials that may be contaminating your fuel.

Particulate
- Removes dirt, rust, and microbes

Water blocking
- Removes dirt, rust, and microbes
- Detects water & restricts flow when tank needs cleaning
10 Micron
Filters out finer particles, restricts flow rate more
30 Micron
Filters out larger particles, restricts flow rate less
STEP
5
Pick your hose
Fill-Rite’s hoses feature long life and superior performance with corrosion-resistant fittings and kink-resistant construction.

Regular
For everyday use in normal climates
Sub-zero temperature
For climates reaching -40 to 0° F/C
Hose lengths & inlet sizes
Longer hoses are ideal for taller equipment or equipment that cannot be parked close to tanks.

STEP
6
Pick your swivel
Swivels provide a smooth and ergonomic range of motion when refueling, allowing you to twist the nozzle to any angle needed.

Swivels
✔ Creates 360-degree range of motion with nozzle
✔ Makes refueling more hassle-free
✔ Rated to -40° F/C
STEP
7
Pick your nozzle
Fill-Rite’s nozzles feature heavy-duty construction and are available in a variety of spout sizes and sleeve colors.

Auto nozzle
Restricts performance more, more convenient
Manual nozzle
Restricts performance less, less convenient
STEP
8
Pick your suction pipe
Our telescoping suction pipe is made from durable steel and is designed to be used with pumps mounted on drums and in-bed transfer tanks.

Spout sizes & fuel types
Nozzle spouts come in three different sizes, to prevent the accidental cross-fueling of vehicles:
- 13/16″ Spout – Petrol or Unleaded Vehicles
- 15/16″ Spout – Standard Diesel Vehicles
- 1-3/16″ Spout – Heavy Equipment & Large Vehicles
